I’ve been exploring the UK for the past five years, and one of the best parts about living here is how easy it is to travel without a car. Even if you don’t drive, like me, the train network can whisk you away to charming towns, historic cities, and seaside escapes, all in a day. Here are some of my favorite spots that are just a train ride away from London.
1- York
Travel Time: 2 hours from London King’s Cross
York is a historic gem in northern England. Stroll through The Shambles, a narrow medieval street said to have inspired Diagon Alley from Harry Potter. Don’t miss York Minster, one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe, and walk along the ancient city walls for panoramic views.
2- Bath
Travel Time: 1.5 hours from London Paddington
Famous for its Roman-built baths, Bath offers a unique blend of ancient history and Georgian elegance. Visit the Roman Baths, admire the iconic Royal Crescent, and don’t miss Pulteney Bridge, one of the few bridges in the world lined with shops. Climb the tower at Bath Abbey for sweeping views of the city.
For a truly relaxing experience, head to Thermae Bath Spa- the UK’s only natural thermal spa, where mineral-rich waters have been enjoyed since Roman times. The spa is especially magical in the evening, with its open-air rooftop pool overlooking the city. That said, if you’re only visiting Bath for the day, you might find it hard to fit it in with everything else, Thermae is best saved for an overnight stay when you can fully unwind.
