Dreaming of a UK escape packed with historic towns, dramatic waterfalls, stunning coastline, and picture-perfect villages? Devon has it all. After spending two days exploring, I can honestly say it’s one of England’s most magical regions and here’s exactly how we spent our time!

Day 1: Castles, Waterfalls, and Seaside Charm

Morning: Totnes

We kicked off the day with a cozy coffee in Totnes, one of Devon’s quirkiest and most charming towns. After wandering around the lively high street, filled with independent shops and local cafes, we grabbed a quick breakfast and headed to Totnes Castle.

This classic Norman motte-and-bailey castle sits proudly above the town and offers beautiful panoramic views. We spent about an hour here before setting off for our next adventure.

Midday: Lydford Gorge

Next stop: Lydford Gorge, one of the most unique places you can visit in the UK!

Hidden in Devon’s lush, temperate rainforest, this is the deepest gorge in the South West. It’s home to the breathtaking 30-metre Whitelady Waterfall and the dramatic Devil’s Cauldron, a swirling pothole shaped by centuries of rushing water.

The circular walk here winds through ancient woodland, alongside fossils, rivers, and wild landscapes that have felt magical since Victorian times.

  • There are two entrances: one near the waterfall, one near the Cauldron.
  • Entry is £12 for adults, £6 for kids — or free for National Trust members.

Evening: Clovelly

After Lydford Gorge, we made our way to Clovelly and honestly, it stole my heart.

Tucked away on the North Devon coast and built into a 400-foot cliff, Clovelly feels like a true step back in time. No cars, just steep cobbled streets, real donkeys, whitewashed cottages, and endless sea views.

Fun fact: the village was gifted by William the Conqueror to his wife and stayed in royal hands until the 13th century. Today, it’s still privately owned by one family who have preserved its storybook charm.

There’s a small entry fee to visit, but it’s absolutely worth it. Clovelly is peaceful, picturesque, and full of history, a true hidden gem.

Night: Ilfracombe

We spent the night in Ilfracombe, ready to explore even more coastal beauty on Day 2.

Day 2: Seaside Magic and Victorian Wonders

Morning: Exploring Ilfracombe

I had no idea England had such a beautiful coastal town! Ilfracombe feels like a secret that’s somehow stayed off most tourists’ radars.

Imagine: a quaint harbour lined with pastel-coloured houses, a tiny 14th-century chapel perched on Lantern Hill, and rugged coastal walks that take your breath away. We saw the striking Verity statue by Damien Hirst and visited the historic Chapel of St Nicholas, one of the oldest working lighthouses in the UK. Ilfracombe also has great cafes, little art galleries, and incredible beaches nearby. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down and just enjoy every moment.

Afternoon: Lynton & Lynmouth

In the afternoon, we headed to Lynton & Lynmouth, a picturesque twin resort nestled where the Exmoor cliffs meet the sea.

The highlight? Riding the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway, the steepest, completely water-powered railway in the world! Opened in 1890, it’s still operating without motors or electricity, relying entirely on the power of water and gravity.

It’s an incredible piece of Victorian engineering and an absolute must-do.

Beyond the railway, both towns offer beautiful coastal paths, historic cottages, and breathtaking views — a perfect, peaceful end to our Devon adventure

Final Thoughts

Devon surprised me at every turn, from fairytale villages and hidden waterfalls to coastal towns that feel untouched by time. If you’re looking for a magical two-day escape in England, Devon should definitely be on your list.
