Every year for my birthday, I usually end up booking a nice restaurant, catching up with friends over dinner and celebrating that way. This year, though, I wanted to do something a little different, something that would bring everyone together and give us a fun experience to remember rather than just another meal.
That’s when I discovered SPYSCAPE in Covent Garden.
It’s easy to think of SPYSCAPE as just a spy museum, but it’s much more than that. It’s an immersive experience where you’ll take on real spy-inspired missions, test your skills and discover what kind of spy you would actually be.
The venue offers two different experiences: SPYGAMES and SPYSCAPE.
SPYGAMES is a more physical challenge inspired by intelligence training, while SPYSCAPE, the experience we chose, is an interactive museum where you’ll explore the world of espionage through immersive exhibits and hands-on spy missions. If you’re fascinated by espionage, psychology and putting your own skills to the test, I’d definitely recommend SPYSCAPE.
As soon as you arrive, you’re given your own wristband, which you use throughout the experience to track your results. You create your profile, leave your bags in complimentary lockers and then you’re ready to begin your mission.
Put Your Spy Skills to the Test
This is where SPYSCAPE really comes to life.
Rather than simply reading about espionage, you become part of the experience. As you move through the different zones, you’ll take on a variety of interactive missions, each designed to test a different skill used in the world of intelligence.
Throughout the experience, you’ll crack secret codes, decode encrypted messages, analyse surveillance footage, spot suspicious behaviour and complete a series of observation, memory and pattern-recognition challenges. One of my favourite missions involved helping an undercover intelligence officer trapped in occupied France by sending coded instructions to help her escape safely. It felt surprisingly immersive and genuinely made us feel like we were part of a real operation.
You’ll also take part in psychology-based assessments that explore how you think and make decisions under pressure. Rather than asking simple personality questions, these challenges evaluate your judgement, ethics, leadership style and decision-making to build your own intelligence profile.
What I loved most was that every mission tested something completely different. Some challenges rewarded quick reactions, while others required patience, logic and close attention to detail. It was fascinating to see how differently everyone in our group approached the same tasks.
Naturally, it became quite competitive. We were constantly comparing scores, celebrating our successes and trying to outdo one another, which made it such a fun experience to do as a group.
My Favourite Challenges
There were two activities that really stood out to me.
The first was the Special Ops Challenge, where you have to react as quickly as possible by hitting lights that randomly appear across a large wall. It looks simple at first, but after a few seconds it becomes surprisingly intense. Everyone in our group became incredibly competitive trying to beat each other’s scores.
I also loved the Surveillance Challenge.
One of my favourite missions was the surveillance challenge. Standing in front of multiple CCTV screens, we had to monitor security camera feeds, track specific individuals and spot suspicious behaviour as events unfolded. It sounds easier than it is, there’s so much happening at once that it’s easy to miss important details. It was really interesting to compare our results afterwards because everyone noticed something completely different.
Some of the challenges tested speed, while others rewarded patience and attention to detail. It was really interesting to see that everyone in our group had completely different strengths.
Discover What Kind of Spy You Are
The best part comes right at the end.
Everything you’ve done throughout the experience contributes to your final results, and SPYSCAPE reveals your own Q Type, a personality profile based on how you actually performed during the missions.
Rather than relying on a simple personality quiz, your profile is built using your performance across all the different challenges, making the results feel much more meaningful.
You’ll also receive scores across different skills such as observation, problem-solving, agility and decision-making. I found it really interesting to compare my results with my friends because none of us ended up with exactly the same strengths. More Than Just Interactive Challenges
While the interactive missions are definitely the highlight, SPYSCAPE is also home to fascinating exhibition spaces that explore the world of espionage. As you make your way through the experience, you’ll come across displays about some of history’s most famous spies, undercover agents and intelligence officers, alongside real spy gadgets and equipment used during covert operations.
I actually found myself spending much longer reading these exhibits than I expected. The stories behind the missions added another layer to the experience and gave me a better understanding of the real world of intelligence and espionage.
Rather than feeling like a traditional museum where you simply walk past display cases, the exhibits are engaging and help bring the history of espionage to life, making the whole experience feel even more immersive.
A Brilliant Birthday or Group Activity
What I loved most about SPYSCAPE is that everyone gets involved.
Instead of sitting around a restaurant table for a few hours, you’re solving problems, competing in challenges, laughing at each other’s mistakes and discovering who actually has the best spy instincts. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, planning a date, organising a team-building activity or simply looking for something different to do in London, it’s one of those experiences that’s genuinely fun for everyone.
Being located right in the heart of Covent Garden also makes it incredibly easy to get to, whether you’re travelling by Tube or bus.
For me, SPYSCAPE turned out to be one of the most memorable birthday celebrations I’ve had in London. It was fun, interactive, surprisingly competitive and gave us something to talk about long after we left. If you’re looking for a unique experience in London that’s a little different from the usual tourist attractions, I’d definitely recommend adding SPYSCAPE to your list.
